On Thursday, 13th February, Year 3 embarked on an exciting adventure to Fishbourne Roman Palace, travelling comfortably in our new partnership mini-bus. The day began with an engaging film that revealed how the palace ruins were discovered back in the 1960s when a water main trench was dug through a field. It was intriguing to think that such a magnificent site had been hidden for centuries, waiting to be uncovered.
Our first workshop involved delving deeper into the lives of those who once lived in the palace, particularly focusing on Tiberius Claudius Togidubnus, an important figure in Roman Britain. We discovered fascinating details about the palace’s architecture and what life was like for its inhabitants through games and roll play, Ask us what was behind the curtain in the kitchen and if we can remember how to write our names in Latin.
Following our workshop, we ventured into the recreated Mediterranean-style gardens then after lunch, we explored the museum. Each of us eagerly hunted for our favourite artefact. Take a look at the photos to see whether we preferred the Roman jewellery, the coins, pottery, or the skeleton!
To cap off our day, we admired the stunning mosaics and the cleverly designed hypocaust system used for heating. Our personal favourite was the almost complete mosaic depicting Cupid riding on a dolphin. It was breathtaking and showcased the incredible artistry of the Romans. This trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace was not only educational but also an unforgettable experience that brought history to life!
